Broccoli Sesame

Abracadabra Broccoli Sesame! Broccoli Sesame is not some type of magic, but it is quick to make and nutritious.  Most of us wish for magic when we try to convince our young children to eat their broccoli. We have no magic solutions for this problem.  We do have some practical advice, teach your children to eat their greens.  Use the following simple steps:

  • Start them at the youngest age possible. Give them raw broccoli to play with and chew on. Be patient, this practice leads to eating it one day.
  • Cook it simply, we suggest boiling the broccoli for no more than three minutes in boiling salted water.  Leave it firm, do not overcook it, nobody likes that.
  • Eat it is often. Make greens a food staple of your diet. For example, eat broccoli routinely, once, twice, or more times during the week.
  • EAT IT YOURSELF. You are your child's template for good behaviour. When they see you eating and enjoying your greens, then they know it is their food, and it is safe to eat.

Lastly,  when they get a little older, you can make the simple and nutritious Broccoli Sesame outlined below.

  • 1 bunch of broccoli, about 1 lb (453.59 g). Wash and peel the broccoli stems. Chop the broccoli into bite-size pieces.
  • 2 tbsp or the juice of one whole orange. With a zester, remove and keep the outer skin of the orange to add extra favour and colour to your Broccoli Sesame Salad.
  • 2 tbsp sesame seeds
  • 1 tbsp of fresh finally chopped or grated ginger root
  • 1 tbsp of tamari sauce or soy sauce
  1. In a pot of boiling water, place and boil the broccoli for three minutes. You want your broccoli cooked but still firm. Drain the water and place the broccoli into a mixing bowl.
  2. Combine and toss the orange juice, tamari sauce, and grated ginger root into cooked broccoli. Add and mix in the orange zest if you retained it.
  3. In a dry pan, over medium to high heat over the stove, roast the sesame seeds for 2 to 3 minutes. Shake the pan and stir the seeds to avoid burning them.
  4.  Mix the seeds with the broccoli or sprinkle on the salad as a garnish.

If you are not going to serve your broccoli or greens immediately, then we suggest you plunge the cooked vegetables into a bowl, pot, or sink of cold water to stop the cooking process. Stopping the cooking process will keep the vegetable firm. If desired, you may warm up the dishes in a microwave or oven before serving.
